Our most important question
Greetings! We are glad you are here. This site explores a question that everyone should think about at least once. It’s a question that has everything to do with where we spend eternity. If this makes you think this site is about religion we would beg to differ. When people use the term “religion” they are often talking about a particular set of beliefs or practices. What we are talking about here is simply what happens to us when we die.
There are two basic schools of thought concerning what comes after death. The first school says that nothing comes after death. It’s the end of everything; there’s no consciousness, no awareness of our surroundings, no existence in any form. The mind and body just stop working and that’s it. The second school says that we continue to exist in some form. Our body may stop working but our consciousness continues. We still have awareness of our surroundings and what’s happening to us.
This site agrees with the second school of thought. We will say why in a moment, but let’s first ask ourselves whether all this makes a difference. If the first school of thought is correct then there will be nothing to be concerned with. There is no existence after death. On the other hand, if we do exist in some form after death it certainly seems important to want to know what that form is like and whether we can do anything in this life to affect what comes after death.
The reason we agree with the second school of thought is that there is evidence for it. For one thing, there are many people who have had “Near Death Experiences.” These are cases where due to a severe illness or injury someone experiences death, at least from a physical standpoint. During these experiences there is a consciousness that continues even when the body stops functioning. In this conscious existence the person may be “watching” medical personnel working on the person’s body or they may be seemingly transported to another realm of existence. If their body is brought to life again they are able to describe the experience they have had. Some of those experiences are described as wonderful and pleasant. Others are described as terrifying. Regardless of what we think of these accounts, they are at least something to consider.
A second and more important point of evidence for life after death is the life of One who rose from the dead after being in the grave for three days. You may have heard of Him. His name is Jesus. Many of His followers had seen Jesus after His resurrection and of course believed it to be true. One of them, named Thomas, doubted it. He said he would not believe that Jesus was alive again unless he could see Jesus risen from the dead and touch2/2His hands. A little later Jesus met Thomas and invited him to touch His hands. Thomas’ responded by saying to Jesus “My Lord and my God!” This is recorded in the Bible in the Gospel of John, chapter 20 and verse 28.
So, if we conclude that there actually is life after death, and that some people have pleasant experiences and others have terrifying experiences, what should be our response? The claim that this website makes is that, in order to have the former type of experience, we need to follow Jesus, the One that rose from the dead. In other words, we have a tremendous opportunity to make a choice that determines whether that next life will be one of joy and blessing or one of fear and torment. There are some verses in the Bible that can help us make the choice that leads to joy and blessing.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 5:8 God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 6:23 The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 1:12 To all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
1 Corinthians 15:3&4 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
Revelation 3:20 (Jesus says) Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
So what is “our most important question?” There was a man who asked one of the followers of Jesus a question, found in Acts 16:30. The question he asked was “What must I do to be saved?” We believe the answer is below:
Romans 10:13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
To call upon the name of the Lord is to believe in Jesus and to ask Him to be your Lord and Savior. The end result will be a life of meaning and confidence, both now and after death. Please take this matter seriously, as it determines your eternal destiny.
